October 2004 Highway Reports

October 8, 2004 - 10:35pm - Unit #220 assisted with a two-vehicle accident on southbound Highway 141 at I-64. Town & Country Police and Fire were already on the scene but since there was such an influx of traffic, the Highway Patrol was also called in to cover the call. The President’s motorcade was initially supposed to travel down Highway 141 from I-64, but due the traffic accident, it had to be re-routed around the scene. Unit #220 assisted by blocking the turn lane and a driving lane with his traffic cones.

October 9, 2004 - 9:00pm - Unit #65 (with unit #02 riding along) stopped to check on two cars partially blocking the right lane on the off ramp from northbound I-270 onto Dougherty Ferry Rd. The woman told 65 she was about to call for a tow truck. 65 told her since they were blocking a lane, he would wait behind them with his lights on until the tow truck arrives. A few minutes later the woman walked back to 65's car and told him they decided to leave the car there and get it in the morning. Both she and 65 left the scene. 65 notified the police about the vehicle.

October 9, 2004 - 9:20 - Unit #220 checked on two vehicles on North Highway Drive just east of Bowles Ave. 220 stayed with the vehicles while they fixed an engine problem. 65 arrived a few minutes later to back up 220. They both remained behind the vehicles with their lights on until the motorists were on their way.

October 9, 2204 - 9:50pm - Unit #65 (with unit #02 riding along) stopped to check on four vehicles on the shoulder of southbound I-55 just north of Butler Hill Rd. A group of about ten teenagers were standing on the shoulder when 65 arrived. They told 65 they had a minor vehicle accident and were exchanging information. They said they didn't need the police. 65 remained behind them for a few minutes until they got going.

October 9, 2004 - 11:40pm - Unit #220 checked on two motorists on I-64 west of I-270. The motorist had roadside assistance on the way to the location so 220 remained with the vehicle until the tow truck arrived. The driver thanked 220 for sticking around.

October 17, 2004 - 10:45pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a stranded motorist driving on the shoulder of I-44 near the Beaumont/Antire exit. The female driver stated she was having vehicle trouble. She also stated that her husband was a mechanic and said he’d look at the car once they made it to a gas station about two miles away. 220 offered the woman his cell phone and a list of towing companies, but she declined both offers of help. She had children in the car and was on her way to St. Clair, MO when the trouble started. Instead, she decided to go on her way.

October 20, 2004 - 9:50pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a motorist on I-55 north of Festus, MO. After speaking to the female driver, he stayed behind her until her tow truck finally arrived about 1.5 hours later. The driver thanked 220 for stopping.

October 22, 2004 - 10:15pm - Unit #220 assisted with traffic control at a house fire in St. Clair, Missouri. When 220 arrived on the scene, he noticed emergency vehicles on both sides of Hwy 30 near Bethel Church Road. He also saw a lone firefighter (wearing non-reflective clothing) trying to stop traffic by waving a blinking flashlight at on-coming vehicles. Since that stretch of highway is marked at 55 miles per hour, 220 immediately turned on his emergency lights and used his traffic cones to block traffic from entering the section of Highway 30 at Bethel Church Road to Highway 32. Fire Department vehicles #9383, #8345, #1693, and #8316 remained on the scene until the fire was under control at 11:30pm. A half-hour later, 220 was allowed to open up the highway in both directions to traffic. The St. Clair Fire Department and a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy thanked 220 for his assistance, along with the female firefighter that he helped. The house was a complete loss and the female occupant of the house was unhurt.

October 24, 2004 - 9:40pm - Unit #220 stopped to assist a motorist on Big Bend Blvd just east of Lindbergh. The driver was changing a flat tire when 220 arrived so 220 stuck around until he finished. The driver thanked 220 for his assistance.

October 30, 2004 - 3:00pm - Unit #02 was walking to his car on the lot of Home Depot in Sunset Hills, MO when he saw an officer attempting to unlock a car for a man next to his car with a door unlock tool. The officer was having trouble unlocking the door so 02 offered his assistance to the officer explaining that he was once a mall security officer and has vast experience with vehicle lock-outs. The officer gave the tool to 02 and said she hasn’t done a lock-out in over six months. 02 had the door unlocked within 15 seconds. The driver thanked 02.

October 30, 2004 - 8:50pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a stranded motorist on I-270 north of Big Bend Blvd in Des Peres, MO. The driver had a flat tire on his jeep but had no spare tire. His friend attempted to put the spare from his truck on the vehicle but it was too big. The driver said he would come back for his vehicle in the morning and thanked 220 for the use of his jack and tire-iron.

October 30, 2004 - 9:25pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a motorist with a flat tire on southbound I-270 at the ramp to go west onto I-44. The driver had the flat tire changed and had the spare tire on the vehicle when 220 arrived. 220 decided to entertain the passengers in the car (they were all kids under the age of 6). Once the tire was changed and tightened the motorist thanked 220 for his help and went on his way.

October 30, 2004 - 9:35pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a motorist in an overheated vehicle on I-270 south of Tesson Ferry. The motorist stated that the temperature gauge would not go down to the normal range so 220 decided to sit with the vehicle until the driver was comfortable enough to drive it home.

October 30, 2004 - 10:50pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a stranded motorist with a flat tire on I-55, just south of the Pevely, MO exit. A roadside assist service vehicle came a few minutes after 220 arrived on the scene and the driver thanked 220 for sticking around.
