December 2004 Highway Reports

December 17, 2004 - 9:15pm – Unit #220 helped a family of four that was recovering from an earlier traffic mishap on I-44, just east of Elm Avenue in Webster Groves, MO. Earlier in the day the driver of the vehicle lost her front tire while traveling down the interstate, which prompted the local police department to shut down the highway in order to remove the vehicle from the scene. 220 came upon the victims and asked if they needed any help. Long story short, the family needed a ride home and 220 provided transportation to two of the people and another vehicle provided a ride for the rest of the family. The trip from Shrewsbury to the City of St Louis took about 20 minutes and the family thanked 220 for his assistance.

December 17, 2004 - 11:00pm - Unit #220 came across a stranded motorist on I-364 (Page Avenue Extension), west of Bennington Drive in Maryland Heights. The vehicle had completely stopped and the driver stated he was on his way to St. Charles to see a female companion. 220 offered the driver a ride since it was a cold evening to be out. The driver thanked 220 for his assistance after receiving the lift to the residence.

December 21, 2004 - 6:20pm - Unit #02 was at Gravios Bluffs and Highway 141 when he spotted smoke coming from under the hood of a parked minivan with a family sitting inside. 02 pulled up to the van to investigate and noticed flames coming out from around the closed hood. 02 told the family in the van to get out and get whatever belongings they might have out of the back. Before he could get out his fire extinguisher, the flames had gotten much worse and were starting to spread to the driver's compartment. 02 called the fire department and kept onlookers and other people who ran up with fire extinguishers away from the van because the fire was too big to be put out with extinguishers. The fire department arrived about four minutes later and put out the fire but the van was a total loss.

December 22, 2004 - 8:15pm - While on his way to pick up a meal for the family, 220 spotted an unusual disturbance in a vehicle at the intersection of Manchester & Geyer Rd. When the electric signal switched from a red light to a green light on Manchester Road the driver stayed on the brakes for roughly a minute and did not move. 220 changed his position from going westbound on Manchester to eastbound to see what the problem was. Unit 220 turned on his overhead amber light to warn traffic behind him of a potential accident but the driver decided to pull forward and into the Mobil gas station at the intersection. 220 pulled up along side the questionable vehicle and asked the female driver if “everything is okay” by using the traditional hand signal. There was a black male driver and female caucasian passenger. The passenger stated “no” by shaking her head so 220 decided to make a call to the Kirkwood Police and requested immediate aid. The male occupant did not want to stay at the Mobil station so the driver decided to pull out while 220 was on the phone with the dispatcher. 220 stated that the vehicle was leaving, but that 220 would stick with the vehicle until a police officer was on the scene. 220 gave his location as eastbound Manchester at Kirkwood Avenue. Soon there were two police cars on the scene. The dispatcher asked if 220 would “flash” his lights to get the attention of the officer and it worked. The driver finally pulled over in front of the Ford dealership on Manchester Road near Woodlawn Avenue. According to the Kirkwood Police, the couple was breaking up when everything happened. The police officers thanked 220 for his assistance.
