- 1:35pm - Unit #02 was driving west on I-64 crossing over the Mississippi
River into downtown St. Louis when the traffic in front of him slowed.
He then saw St. Louis City Fire Trucks going eastbound across the
bridge into IL. 02 figured the trucks were turning around in IL
to get to an accident on the westbound side of the bridge. Within
a minute, he saw the accident in front of him and there were no
emergency vehicles on the scene yet. He turned on his lights and
blocked two lanes of traffic with his car. He walked up to the cars
involved and saw that one of the drivers was injured. She had a
compound fracture in her leg. He was about to go back to his car
to get his medical gear when an ambulance pulled up next to the
car. He started walking back to his car to get out of the way of
the paramedics. He started to get out his cones to direct traffic
when an ILDOT highway truck stopped behind his car. The driver of
the truck asked 02 if he was involved in the accident and 02 said
no. The driver asked 02 to leave the scene to him. 02 complied and
left the scene.

in front of the truck. 02 asked him if he needed any help. He said
his engine had no oil in it. He further stated he had a slow leak
in the engine and had not checked the oil in a while. 02 drove back
to the Visitor Information Center in the park and called St. Louis
County Park Ranger Dispatch. He explained the situation and they
told 02 they would dispatch a Park Ranger to the park. 02 drove
back to the motorist and waited with him until the Ranger arrived.
He then left the scene.

south of Sappington Rd. A female motorist suffered damage to her
vehicle on the passenger side of the car, but it was not a vehicle

and waited until the tow truck arrived before leaving the scene.
While waiting, 220 contacted the Sunset Hills Police and notified
them of the situation.
August
6, 2003 - 10:30pm - While on the southbound side of I-270, 220 saw
a stranded motorist on the northbound side of I-270 and went to
investigate. The vehicle stalled out while driving and the owner
was contacting his AAA company when 220 arrived. Since no further
help was needed, 220 proceeded to head back to the above incident.
Sunset Hills Police were notified and St. Louis County Police was
called because it was beyond the city limits of Sunset Hills.

would be on the highway overnight.
August
16, 2003 - 11:05pm - Unit 220 spotted a stranded motorist on I-55
north of Meramec Bottom Rd. A St. Louis County Police Officer in
an unmarked vehicle pulled up in front of it at roughly the same
time. Unit 220 turned around at Meramec Bottom Rd and headed northbound
assuming the motorist would be taken care of by the time he reached
the vehicle. As it turned out the police officer left the scene
leaving the female motorist to fend for herself. 220 stayed with
the motorist until the woman's father arrived, and then left the
scene.
August
19, 2003 - 9:35pm - Unit #220 heard a report of a vehicle accident
on Lindbergh Blvd south of Watson Rd in front of Helen Fitzgerald's
(a local bar). 220 went to investigate and found Sunset Hills Police
already on the scene. The accident was blocking traffic in both
northbound lanes so 220 decided to help the officers out by directing
traffic away from the scene near the crest of a hill leading to
the accident. 220 helped the officers out for roughly an hour directing
traffic and when the scene was finally cleared, one of the Sunset
Hills Police Officers drove up to 220 and thanked him for the assistance.

23, 2003 - 11:05pm - While leaving the scene of the above incident,
220 located another stranded motorist in the same area but closer
to Manchester Road. 220 checked on the motorist and was advised
that help was on the way. Since it was a female driver and a female
friend, 220 decided it was better if he stuck around until their
help arrived. The female motorist's father showed up minutes later
and between them, they decided to call a tow truck. 220 did not
wait for the the tow truck to arrive, since the driver appeared
to be in good hands.
August
23, 2003 - 11:50pm - Unit #220 spotted six teenagers walking down
I-55 south of I-255 and stopped to investigate. Looking towards
I-255, there was a black vehicle on the shoulder. 220 assumed that
was where they came from. Further south of them there was an occupied
vehicle that pulled off onto the shoulder and it was attempting
to reverse up the shoulder (towards them). 220 made contact with
the teens and offered his cell phone to anyone that needed it. A
female approached, took the phone, and made a phone call. However,
there was still the problem with the other vehicle further south.
220 walked ahead of the group of teens and went to see what the
problem was. As it turned out, the driver of the vehicle was an
off-duty Highway Patrol Officer in an unmarked vehicle. 220 explained
the situation to the officer and stated that the kids were going
to walk to Butler Hill Road. The officer stated that it was unsafe
to walk the highway and offered to drive the teenagers to a gas
station since he was traveling in the same general direction. 220
left the scene to the officer and went on his way.

headed east. As it turned out, he located the vehicle in question
but it was eastbound on I-64 east of Hwy 94, not at Chesterfield
Airport Rd. Unit 220 spoke with the motorist and explained the situation.
The motorist said she had called 911 several times and they either
disconnected or forwarded her calls. The driver only needed help
with getting a lug nut freed from the wheel. Unit 220 ended up changing
the tire for the female motorist and gave her directions on how
to get to Glendale from her present location. The driver was from
Iowa City and in the process of moving to a place in Glendale when
the tire blew.
August
27,2003 - 9:50pm - Unit #220 stopped to check on a vehicle on I-64
at the I-270 north/south split. The driver had already been checked
on at 5:30pm and was waiting for her ride to show up. 220 offered
his cell phone and bottled water to the driver and stated that he
would come back after a while to check on her, if she was still
around. 220 came back at 11:20pm and noticed the vehicle and driver
was still there. He offered his cell phone to the driver again and
waited until 12:00 midnight for her ride to arrive. At midnight

south of Richardson Rd. To his surprise, the vehicle was occupied
and the driver was asleep on the passenger side of the car. 220
knocked on the passenger side window and asked if the driver was
okay. The driver stated that "someone stopped by about 5pm,
but you are the first person I've seen tonight." 220 offered
his cell phone to the driver, but the driver stated he was going
to stay with the vehicle until morning when the tow truck was suppose
to arrive. 220 then left the scene.
August
29, 2003 - 10:45pm - Unit #220 heard a report of a two car vehicle
accident with a person ejected on Lemay Ferry Rd. & Forder Rd.
in South County and went to help. 220 arrived on scene and immediately
shut down the left turn lane on Forder. There were emergency crews
already on the scene so 220 concentrated on helping the police with
traffic control at the intersection. The occupants of both vehicles
were sent to area hospitals. Forty five minutes later the accident
was cleared up enough for 220 to re-open the turn lane. Unit #65
arrived on the scene behind 220 to back him up and divert traffic
while 220 picked up the cones from behind his truck. 220 and 65
then left the scene.

August
29, 2003 - 11:50pm - Unit #220 checked on a motorist on I-55 just
south of Meramec Bottom Rd. The fuel pump on the vehicle went out
and since they weren't from the area, they needed directions to
the closest Walmart. 220 stayed with the broken down vehicle while
two of the occupants drove off in another vehicle to go to the Walmart.
220 stayed with the vehicle because it had kids in it, but after
waiting for an hour for the driver to return, 220 left the scene.
August
29, 2003 - 11:50pm - Unit #65 stopped to check on a van and a car
on the narrow shoulder of northbound I-270 under Manchester Rd.
65 walked up to the vehicles and there was a father and son hooking
up a tow chain so the van could tow the car. 65 told them he would
stay behind them until they finished hooking up the car. About five
minutes later the father got into the van and the son got into the
car and they pulled out onto the Interstate. 65 pulled out behind
them and was expecting to drive away and leave them but they were
only going 25mph in the right lane of the Interstate. Fearing this
would cause an accident, 65 stayed behind them and turned on his
arrow stick to divert cars coming up behind them out of the right
lane. 65 followed them like this for about five miles until they
exited I-64 onto Lindbergh Blvd. The father waved thank you to 65.
65 turned around and got back onto the highway since the speed limit
on Lindbergh was much slower.

August
30, 2003 - 12:20am - Unit #65 stopped to check on a van with a lady
standing outside of it on the shoulder of northbound I-270 just
south of I-64. The lady told 65 she had a flat tire and her father
just left to go home and get some tools to get the stuck tire off
the van. She asked 65 if he could remain with her until her father
returned. 65 waited with her for over thirty minutes. Her father
returned with tools and a big jack and changed the tire within a
few minutes. The father thanked 65 for waiting with her and then
they drove away.

directions (via a road map) and sent her on her way.
August
30, 2003 - 1:50am - Unit #220 assisted the Frontenac Police Department
with a two car vehicle accident on eastbound I-64 at Spoede Road.
Both vehicles were traveling in the same direction when one vehicle
tapped the other, sending it careening into a drainage ditch. The
same vehicle also knocked down a light pole and tore down part of
a metal fence. The other vehicle ended up crashing into the median.
220 arrived just after the accident happened and called the police.
One patrol car started driving the wrong way down the eastbound
off-ramp so 220 blocked the entrance with his vehicle. Together,
220 and the officer shut down the highway to assess the situation.
Slowly, two lanes of traffic were re-opened but the inside fast
lane remained closed. The off-ramp remained open until it was time
to move the vehicle from the drainage ditch. The driver that caused
the accident was arrested immediately for DUI. The accident scene
was cleared up by 3am and 220 was thanked for showing up and helping
out.
August

car there overnight and work on it in the daylight.
