9, 2003 - 11:55pm - Unit #220 assisted Frontenac Police & Fire
with a vehicle accident on the eastbound on-ramp from Spoede Rd
to I-64 east. 220 entered onto I-64 westbound and headed to the
scene to see what was going on. 220 found the accident with firetruck
#3928 not very far behind, so he decided to block the entrance to
the on-ramp so that #3928 could arrive without incident. Abbott
Ambulance was only three minutes away and at that time he heard
a good friend of his (an officer) call over the radio that the on-ramp
to eastbound I-64 needed to be shut down. 220 blocked one side of
the ramp with his truck (emergency lights on), grabbed his cones
and blocked the other entrance. The accident scene was cleared within
30 minutes and 220 was thanked by his friend for blocking the entrance
ramps. The driver had apparently gone into a diabetic shock while
he was driving down the on-ramp and according to witnesses he jumped
the curb at 40 mph and landed in a pit at the bottom. If it was
not for the pit, he would have been driving westbound in the eastbound
lanes of I-64. Except for a bruise on his head, the driver escaped
unharmed and damage was limited to his truck.

12, 2003 - 10:00pm - Unit #65 stopped to assist a motorist on northbound
I-270 just north of I-44. The female driver was on her cell phone
when 65 walked up to the car. She told 65 she was calling a friend
to come get her. Since the shoulder was narrow at that location,
65 remained behind her with his lights on until her friend arrived.
When her friend finally arrived, she informed 65 that she would
come back for the car in the morning. 65 advised her to turn off
her flashers or she would have a dead battery by morning. She thanked
65, turned off her flashers, and left in her friend's car.

April
14, 2003 - 6:50pm - Unit #65 (with unit #02 riding along) were on
there way to the monthly REACT meeting when they spotted a car driving
down the shoulder of southbound I-55 from I-270 with a flat tire.
65 drove south to the next exit (Butler Hill Rd.) and stopped at
a gas station thinking that's where the driver was headed. Within
a few minutes the driver was spotted exiting onto Butler Hill Rd.
and stopped behind 65 at the gas station. 02 asked if he needed
any help changing the tire. The driver told 02 he didn't have a
jack. 65 let the driver use his hydraulic jack. The driver started
to strip one of the lug nuts while trying to take it off so he stopped.
65 offered him his cell phone and the driver called his father and
asked to bring him a wrench set. 65 and 02 waited around for 30
minutes until his father arrived with the tools. He was then able
to change the tire and thanked 65 for the jack. 65 and 02 then continued
on to the meeting.

April
18, 2003 - 9:15pm - Unit #220 and unit #65 assisted a tow truck
driver on southbound I-270 just south of Highway 30. The tow truck
driver was just starting to hook up the van when 65 and 220 arrived.
Because of the narrow shoulder he was forced to stand in the right
lane to hook up the van. 220 stopped in the right lane with his
lights on and shielded the driver while he hooked up the car. 65
stopped behind 220 with his light on too. After a few minutes he
finished and walked back to 220 and told 220 how much he appreciated
the help. He then got back into his truck and left with the van.

April
19, 2003 - 9:30pm - Unit #65 was traveling in the right lane of
southbound I-270 approaching Highway 21 when he saw a car ahead
of him with its hazard lights on and traveling very slow. As 65
came up on the car, he turned on his rear strobe lights to warn
cars behind him. He followed the slow moving car onto the exit ramp
at Highway 21 where it came to a stop on the shoulder. The driver
told 65 the engine just couldn't make it up the exit ramp hill.
65 offered his cell phone and the driver called for a tow truck.
65 remained behind the vehicle until the tow truck arrived and towed
away the car.

April
23, 2003 - 9:25pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist two motorists
with a flat tire on I-270 just south of Clayton Rd. The female driver
had a tow truck in route and was waiting for it to arrive. The other
car was her boyfriend. 220 waited behind them with his lights on
until the tow truck arrived. AAA showed up but they had to get an
actual tow truck because the tire would not come off the wheel.
220 left the scene since the AAA truck was going to stay there until
the tow truck arrived.
April
23, 2003 - 10:00pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a Marten truck
driver with repairs to his vehicle while on I-44 west of I-270.
220 gave him a bungee cord to wrap around an air hose that was dragging
on the ground. The driver asked where the next truck stop was and
220 assisted with that information. Since the driver could not release
the brakes to the trailer, he had to stay where he was. 220 stuck
around until 11:20 and left the scene after it was determined that
it would be awhile before help arrived.
April
28, 2003 - 12:00pm - Unit #65 was traveling on eastbound I-44 at
I-270 when he noticed a vehicle stopped in the fast lane facing
the wrong way on westbound I-44 under I-270. At that moment a call
went out over the scanner for the accident and a Sunset Hills Police
Car was dispatched. The police car was coming from a long distance
away so 65 decided to head to the scene. 65 exited at Watson Rd.,
turned on his lights, and did a u-turn in the road to get onto westbound
I-44. 65 then heard unit #02 on the GMRS radio and advised him to
come to the scene to help with the accident. 65 entered the highway
with his lights on and motorists let him merge over to the fast
lane. 65 stopped in the fast lane with his lights on and blocked
it to shield the driver. He checked on the driver and she wasn't
injuried. 02 called for 65 and told him he was turning around at
Watson Rd. and would be there in a minute. 02 also stated there
was a Sunset Hills police car in front of him. A minute later the
police car and 02 arrived on the scene. 65 told the officer "unless
you need our help with anything, we're going to leave". The
officer said he would handle it and thanked 65 for stopping. 65
and 02 then left the scene.
