October 2002 Highway Reports

October 4, 2002 - 6:15pm - Unit #220 stopped to help a female motorist (& friend) while en route to a St. Louis Blues hockey game. The motorist had a flat tire and was blocking the traffic lane on Market Street & Bernard Avenue in St. Louis City. 220 turned on his lights and blocked the right lane with his cones. He then provided his 4-way tire iron and hydraulic jack and proceeded to change the tire. The motorist offered 220 money for his help, which he politely refused. Instead, he gave her a business card and suggested they send in a donation if they chose. She thanked 220 for his assistance.

October 5, 2002 - 9:30pm - Unit #220 and #65 stopped to check on a motorist on northbound I-270 at Dougherty Ferry Rd. The driver told 220 he had a tow truck on the way so 220 and 65 waited behind him until it arrived.

October 6, 2002 - 8:00pm - Unit #220 assisted a stranded motorist with a flat tire on I-270 just south of Olive Street in Creve Coeur. The motorist only needed some light to change the tire and 220 provided more than enough. He thanked 220 for stopping.

October 8, 2002 - ??? - Unit #220 had just finished some grocery shopping when he noticed people stopping for no apparent reason on eastbound Manchester Rd at Lindbergh Blvd. 220 got to the scene and found a 2-car accident blocking one of the two eastbound lanes. 220 turned around at the intersection and turned on his lights and stopped behind the two vehicles. He then got on his cell phone and informed Kirkwood Police of the accident. Within 5-6 minutes, Kirkwood Police were on the scene and 220 left the scene to get out of the way. Nobody was hurt in the accident.

October 11, 2002 - 5:25pm - Unit 12 spotted a stranded motorist on the inside shoulder of northbound I-270 between I-64 and Ladue Road. Unit 12 was not in his own car and did not have any emergency signaling equipment so he didn't stop to help. Instead, he placed a cell phone call to MODOT's Motorist Assistance Dept., identified himself as a REACT member, and explained the situation. MODOT dispatched help immediately.

October 12, 2002 - 12:25am - Unit #220 stopped to check on a motorist with a flat tire while on his way home. The incident occurred on I-270 northbound, north of J.J. Kelly Memorial Drive in Des Peres. The motorist (from out of state) had just rented the vehicle for personal business and was en route back to his hotel when the flat occurred. Unit 220 spoke with the man, who was on his cell phone, and asked if he needed help. The man said that Roadside Assistance was on its way and 220 didn't need to stick around. But he thanked 220 for stopping anyway.

October 17, 2002 - 4:30pm - Unit #65 (with unit #02 riding along) stopped to assist a lady with a flat tire on eastbound Highway 30 just east of I-270. The driver told 65 she didn't have the tool in her truck to lower the spare tire from under the bed of the truck. She wanted 65 to call MODOT Motorist Assist to help her. 65 told her that since she wasn't on an Interstate, Motorist Assist would probably not respond. 65 called the Sunset Hills Police and they sent an officer to the scene. The officer also told the driver that MODOT would not respond. The driver called her husband to come to the scene to help her. 65 told the Sunset Hills officer that he would remain out with the vehicle. The officer then left and 65 heard him (over the scanner) radio to his dispatcher, "I'll be in service...there's a state vehicle with emergency lights on the scene and he and his ride-a-long will remain out with the motorist". Her husband arrived on the scene about 45 minutes later. 65 supplied him with his hydraulic jack and lug nut wrench to take off the flat tire. 65 then remained at the scene and kept his jack under the truck while the couple went to repair the flat tire. They returned 20 minutes later and put the repaired tire back on the truck. They thanked 65 for helping and left the scene.

October 25, 2002 - 9:15pm - Unit #65 was exiting onto Highway 30 from southbound I-270 when he came upon a stalled car and a tow truck partially blocking the left lane at the top of the ramp. The tow truck did not have his emergency lights on and was starting to hook up the car. 65 stopped behind the car in the left lane and turned on his lights. Within a minute, a Sunset Hills police car backed down the ramp from Highway 30 with his lights on and got behind 65. 65 then pulled out to the center lane and left the scene to let the officer handle the situation.

October 25, 2002 - 10:40pm - Unit #220 assisted with a vehicle accident in Sunset Hills at the intersection of Watson Rd & Lindbergh. 220 blocked the left lane to go south on Lindbergh Blvd. Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision at the intersection. After 20 minutes, one of the the Sunset Hills Police officers thanked 220 for his assistance.

October 25, 2002 - 11:05pm - Unit #220 assisted a stranded motorist with a flat tire on the ramp from eastbound I-64 onto southbound I-270. At first there were two vehicles on scene. The passenger of one vehicle stated that she was taking the driver of the 2nd vehicle home. Upon further examination of the 2nd vehicle, 220 saw it had a flat on the passenger side. At 11:50pm the tow truck finally arrived.
