November 2002 Highway Reports

November 11, 2002 - 7:00pm - Unit #44, 65, and 303 were at the Ponderosa at Lindbergh at I-55 waiting for other Tri-County REACT members to arrive for a meeting when unit #02 radioed to 65 over GMRS that there was a stalled vehicle blocking a lane on southbound Lindbergh in front of Ponderosa. Unit 44 and 65 pulled out and stopped behind the car with their lights on. The female driver told 44 that her car just died. 44 let her use his cell phone to call a friend. The driver then put her baby in 65's car to keep warm while she waited for her friend. While waiting, a St. Louis County Police car pulled up behind 65. 44 explained to the officer what REACT was and he was just helping the motorist. The officer had never heard of REACT before and threatened to issue tickets to 44 and 65 for their actions. The officer then radioed for her supervisor to come to the scene. Within a few minutes, a police lieutenant arrived and told the officer about REACT and to let them go. 44 and 65 left to go back to Ponderosa and left the motorist and her baby with the officer.

November 23, 2002 - 9:44pm - Unit #220 assisted a stranded motorist with a flat tire on I-270 south of Dougherty Ferry Rd. The owner's father was on his way with a jack so 220 stuck around until he arrived.

November 23, 2002 - 11:03pm - Unit #220 assisted another motorist with a flat tire on I-270 north of I-44. 220 sat in his vehicle with his lights on and monitored traffic while the driver finished changing the tire.

November 23, 2002 - 11:35pm - Unit #220 assisted the Chesterfield Fire Protection District and Chesterfield Police at an accident scene on Wild Horse Creek Rd. A vehicle being driven recklessly by a teen, slammed into a concrete wall, entrapping him. 220 monitored traffic for the police dept. at a difficult bend in the roadway (which he shut down at times so that fire equipment could pass safely).

November 24, 2002 - 8:50pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on Hwy 40 near I-270.

November 24, 2002 - 9:10pm - Unit #220 monitored traffic for two motorists that had stopped to change a flat tire in one of the vehicles on Dougherty Ferry Rd east of I-270.

November 27, 2002 - 3:05pm - Unit #220 checked on a Freightliner (18-wheeler) that was smoking heavily (from its rear tires) as it traveled westbound on I-70 near the town of Lamine (MM89). The 18-wheeler had just gone over the crest of a hill and stopped on the other side. 220 turned his lights on to warn traffic and stopped at the top of the hill. He then walked down the shoulder and talked to the driver to see if he could assist him in any way. The driver had just finished contacting a local truck service in Lamine and was told it would be about 15 mins until someone was there. 220 went back to his vehicle, waited until the tow truck arrived, and left the scene.

November 27, 2002 - 4:05pm - Unit #220 stopped to check on a motorist on I-70 at the Rocheport, MO exit. The driver was having car trouble so 220 loaned the man his cell phone to call for help. The individual the man called said he'd be there ASAP, but he was 120 miles away in Kansas City. 220 left the man briefly and went to the closest gas station. He came back with a hot cup of hot chocolate so that the man could have something hot to drink while he waited. The man stayed with the vehicle (a Mercedes) even though the temperature was dropping to just below freezing. The man was en route to Peoria, Illinois to be with his parents for Thanksgiving when trouble started.

November 30, 2002 - 9:05pm - Unit #220 assisted a tow truck operator with traffic control as he changed a tire for a motorist on I-270 northbound, near the Lindbergh Blvd exit in South County.

November 30, 2002 - 11:00pm - Unit #220 checked on a motorist who's car had died while on the on-ramp from Hwy 40 east to I-270 south, near the top of a small hill. The driver asked if 220 would stick around due to the intensity of the traffic in the immediate area. 220 stuck around and waited for the tow truck driver to arrive and then left the scene.
