- 9:30pm - Unit #220 and unit #65 were
at a gas station on Meramec Bottom Rd. at I-55 when a black Lexus
pulled up to the dumpster next to the station with two black males
inside. The driver got out and started to urinate in the grass.
65 noticed this and alerted 220. The driver got back into the car
and started to drive away. 65 and 220 decided to follow him because
he seemed alittle suspicious. The driver started to drive in both
lanes of Meramac Bottom and then got onto I-55 southbound. While
on I-55, he began swerving from lane to lane. He exited I-55 at
the next exit (Highway 141) and tried to lose 65 by getting back
onto northbound I-55. 65 called 911 to report the driver and continued
to follow him. The driver exited again onto Meramec Bottom and got
right back onto southbound I-55 again. He exited onto Highway 141
again and turned right onto 141. 65 was still behind him and was
now dialing the City of Arnold Police Department because they were
now in their city limits. The driver made a right onto a side street
to turn and shake 65. 65 saw him turn but continued on down 141
to make the suspects think their fast turn worked and they lost
65. But 65 radioed to 220, who was 1/4 mile behind 65 and fast approaching
the suspects, that they had turned right and he needed to follow
them. The suspects turned around on the side street and were waiting
at the stoplight to turn left onto I41 when 220 found them. He quickly
turned right onto the side street and got behind them. The suspects
were not looking for a red truck (220) to tail them, just a green
Lumina (65). They drove down 141 back to I-55 with 220 right behind
them. 65 had turned around at the next light and was heading back
to 220's location. The suspects then entered the I-55 off ramp (the
wrong way) and started driving toward approaching traffic. They
turned around on the ramp and pulled into a gas station on 141 at
I-55. 220 stopped on the lot and 65 caught up again and stopped
on a lot next to the gas station. 65 was still on the phone with
the Arnold PD keeping the dispatcher informed. She had police cars
in route to the gas station. The suspects then left the station
after a minute and got onto 141 at I-55. 65 got behind them again.
The suspects noticed 65's car behind them while they were waiting
for the left turn light to turn green so they could get onto southbound
I-55. They ran the red light, turned left, and crashed into construction
barrels. They continued down the ramp and 65 caught up to them.
He was still keeping the dispatcher informed of where they were
and what they were doing. They exited southbound I-55 onto Richardson
Road and stopped at another gas station on Richardson Rd. The passenger
went inside the station. Two police cars stopped across the street
and waited for the suspects to exit the lot. They suspects left
the station a minute later and got back onto northbound I-55 with
two police cars behind them this time. 65 and 220 also followed.
The officers pulled the car over on northbound I-55 at 141 after
the suspects tried to lose the officers by acting like they were
going to exit I-55 and then getting back on real quick. The officers
determined that the passenger had two felony warrants out for his
arrest. He was taken to the City of Aronld jail. It is unknown to
65 and 220 if the driver was drunk. The officers were still talking
to him when 65 and 220 left the scene after the officers took down
65's info.

March 5, 2002 - 2:00pm - Unit #02 was driving
eastbound crossing the Mississippi River on I-55/70 into downtown
St. Louis from IL, when two cars in front of him sideswiped each
other and came to a stop in front of him. 02 slammed on his breaks
and stopped without hitting the two cars. He heard screeching sounds
behind him and heard more accidents occuring behind him. 02 got
out of his car (which didn't get hit at all) and looked behind him
to see a total of ten cars involved in the accident. 02 called 911
and began to triage the victims at the scene. Within minutes, emergency
crews began to arrive on the scene and took over for 02. 02 himself
was injured from stopping so quickly. His seatbelt tighened around
his chest and injured his ribs. Normally he would have assisted
police with traffic control but he left the scene after giving officers
the story about how the accident happened. His ribs were bothering
him and he wanted to get home.
March 6, 2002 - 3:30pm - Unit #65 was at
home when he received a call from unit 02 asking if 65 could come
over to his house immediately. 02 only lived a block away so 65
was there in less than a minute. 02 was several houses down the
street from his house when 65 pulled up. 02 told 65 there was a
red Ford Escort in his rear driveway when he got home and he didn't
know the person the car. 02 and 65 were out of view from the suspect
so 65 drove past the house to get a better look. 65 saw the suspect
sitting in the car and continued driving past. He turned around
down the street and came back to 02's location. 65 told 02 it appeared
the suspect was hiding out there for whatever reason. 02 then called
the St. Louis County Police and asked them to send over an officer.
While he was dong this, the suspect drove away. The officer arrived
a minute later and 02 and 65 gave the officer a description of the
vehicle and told him what the suspect was doing. The officer said
he would try to find the vehicle. 02 and 65 remained at that location
and listened to the scanner for afew minutes. An officer over the
scanner stated he found the red Escort a mile away and had it pulled
over. After awhile he told his dispatcher he had the driver in custody
and was taking him to jail. 02 later learned that evening that the
suspect had robbed a Baskin Robbins ice cream store a short distance
away without displaying a weapon and was hiding out in 02's driveway.
March 8, 2002 - 10:00pm - Unit #220 and
unit #65 assisted a motorist on the shoulder of southbound I-55
just north of Butler Hill Road. The female driver told 220 she was
having engine trouble and it just decelerated. 220 checked the engine
and found it was leaking transmission fluid. 220 told her he and
65 would follow behind her until she exited the highway incase she
had more trouble. She got the car going again and 220 and 65 followed
her until she exited onto Meramec Bottom Road.

March 14, 2002 - 10:00pm - Unit #220 and
unit #65 were at a gas station on Meramec Bottom at I-55 when 220
noticed a white van in the lot with five males huddled around the
sliding door. They were acting suspicious because they kept looking
around the lot every few seconds to see if anyone was watching them.
220 and 65 continued to watch them for about five minutes. 65 noticed
one male counting money at one point and then handed something very
small to another male. 220 called the police at that point. A few
minutes later the male that was counting the money and another male
drove away in the white van. 220 got the license plate numbers.
The other three males got into a pick-up truck. Just as they were
about to leave, the police arrived. 220 told the officer what he
and 65 had seen. The officer asked the three males to step out of
the truck. He searched the truck and the males but didn't find anything
in their possession. They told the officer they were at the van
to buy a puppy. (They did have a puppy with them in the truck) They
officer then ran their names through the computer and found that
one male had one warrant out for his arrest and another male had
six warrants out for his arrest. The officers arrested the suspects
and then left the lot.

March 15, 2002 - 9:35pm - Unit #65 and
unit #220 assisted a stranded motorist out of gas on northbound
I-270 just north of Highway 30. The female driver was from Ohio
and didn't have a cell phone. 65 brought up his gallon of gas and
poured it into her tank. She then started her engine and thanked
65 for stopping.

March 15, 2002 - 10:50pm - Unit #220 and
unit #65 stopped to check on a motorist on westbound I-44 just west
of the Soccer Park Road exit. 65 noticed the vehicle on the shoulder
at 8:30pm that evening but didn't stop because the driver had his
engine running, his headlights on, and didn't have his emergency
flashers on. 220 and 65 decided to check on it because it had been
sitting there for over 2 hours. 220 walked up and noticed the driver
was asleep. He tapped on the window and the driver woke up. The
driver told 220 we was ok. He had gotten off work earlier that evening
and had pulled over because he was very tired. He then pulled away
and continued on home.

March 17, 2002 - 8:30pm - Unit #65 stopped
to assist a tow truck driver hooking up a van on the shoulder of
southbound I-270 just north of I-44. There was virtually no shoulder
where the van was and the van blocked the emergency lights on the
tow truck so approaching drivers were not aware of the tow driver
standing in the right lane hooking up the van. 65 stopped behind
the van with his lights on to slow down traffic. He then called
for unit #220 to come to the scene. 220 arrived a minute later and
stopped with his lights on in the newly forming right lane behind
the van to shield the tow truck driver. 220 and 65 remained at the
scene until the van was towed away (about 15 minutes later).

March 25, 2002 - 6:45pm - While driving
to Kansas City, MO, unit #220 heard a report of a possible vehicle
accident on I-70 near the 121 mile marker (over his Citizens Band
radio), in the median. As 220 approached the crest of a hill, he
focused in on a vehicle with its hazard lights on in the middle
of the highway on the west side of Tirche Creek (outside of Columbia,
Missouri). 220 stopped his truck ahead of the vehicle, walked back,
and tried to get some information on the accident from the driver.
The driver stated that his wife was travelling ahead of him but
as he approached the bridge overpass, he lost control (icy conditions)
and bounced off the concrete guard rail. The driver had minor back
pains but was otherwise okay (and so were the man's two sons). After
a few minutes passed, the man's wife turned her vehicle around and
headed back to the scene. 220 dialed 911 and got ahold of the Columbia
Police Department and relayed what information he had already. Fifteen
minutes later, 220 used his cell phone again and this time called
the Missouri Highway Patrol. Within another fifteen minutes, the
MSHP was on the scene and 220 left. Apparently rough weather was
passing through the area at the time, which left both state and
local authorities scrambling to respond to all the accident calls,
which accounted for the delay.
March 28, 2002 - 8:15pm - Unit #02 and
unit #65 assisted a motorist on the shoulder of eastbound I-44 just
west of Bowles Ave. The motorist and his friend were loading their
car (that was broken down on the shoulder) onto a trailer to haul
away. They asked 02 if he and 65 could remain behind them until
they finished. So 02 and 65 remained behind the motorist with their
lights on until they finished securing the car to the trailer and
drove away.
