January 2002 Highway Reports

January 4, 2002 - 9:00pm - Unit #02 stopped on the ramp from Bowles Ave. onto westbound I-44 to assist two cars on westbound I-44 (right next to him). He asked the female driver in the second car if she needed any help. She explained to him that the unoccupied vehicle in front of her was her husband's car. It was left there because he was pulled over and arrested earlier that evening. She and her friend were waiting for another family to arrive with the extra key so she could drive the car home. She thanked 02 for stopping but said there wasn't anything he could do for her.

January 6, 2002 - 8:45pm - Unit #65 (with unit 02 riding along) and unit #73 were traveling on southbound I-55 just south of I-270 in a snowstorm when they heard multiple reports of vehicle accidents on I-55 (northbound and southbound) at Butler Hill Rd. 65, 02, and 73 were less than a mile away so they proceeded to the scene to see if they could help. One County Police officer arrived on the scene of the southbound I-55 accident just before 65 and 73 did. 65, 02, and 73 continued southbound to turn around at the next exit because they could see the northbound accident and there weren't any emergency vehicles on the scene yet. When 73 drove over the I-55 bridge over Butler Hill Rd, his rear wheel drive truck hit an ice patch and started to spin out. He quickly recovered from the slide but decided it was best if he got off at the next exit and not get back on the slick highway (for fear he could cause an accident and make things worse). 65 and 02 turned around at Meramec Bottom Rd and headed back northbound on I-55 to the accident. 65 turned on his lights and drove the mile back to the scene. By this time, the fire department had arrived at the accident. 65 blocked the left lane behind the firemen and EMT's (to protect them from being struck by any vehicles) until the police arrived on the scene.

January 12, 2002 - 5:00pm - Unit #65 received a call on his cell phone from unit #02, 02 was on westbound Highway 30 at Rahning Rd. in the left turn lane. He told 65 he had an unoccupied vehicle blocking the lane. 65 arrived on the scene about five minutes later. He turned on his lights and stopped behind 02. At that moment, the owner of the vehicle returned to the scene. He told 02 he thought the altinator was the problem. 65 brought up his jumped pack from his car and hooked it up to the battery. They tried to start the engine but it didn't work. The owner told 65 he had a tow truck on the way so 65 told him he and 02 would remain behind him until it arrived. The tow truck arrived five minutes later and towed the car away.

January 12, 2002 - 5:20pm - Unit #65 was heading back home (via I-270) from the above report when he heard a report of a vehicle accident with injuries in the fast lane of westbound I-44 at the Soccer Park Road exit. 65 was a half mile away getting onto westbound I-44 from I-270 when he heard this. When he got to the exit, he saw headlights facing him next to the fast lane. An 18 wheeler had clipped a car, turning it 180 degrees into the wall. The truck didn't stop at the accident scene. There were no emergency vehicles on the scene yet and there was a group of people standing on the yellow line so 65 turned on his lights, stopped behind the car, grabbed his rescue bag, and ran up to see if he could do anything to help. The lady driver was dazed, confused, and possibly in shock. She wasn't bleeding and 65 could hear the sirens coming so he concentrated on getting traffic out of the left lane so no one would be hit. An officer pulled up behind 65 and blocked the left lane with his car. 65 helped the officer put out cones and flares until more police and fire trucks arrived on the scene. A fire truck stopped next to 65's car so 65 was forced to remain at the scene until it left (about 30 minutes later). The driver walked to the ambulance and was taken to the hospital.

January 12, 2002 - 9:15pm - Unit #220 and unit #65 heard a report of a vehicle accident with injuries on Baptist Church Road at Highway 21. They were only a few miles away so they went to the scene to see if they could help. They got to the scene and found a SUV in the middle of Baptist Church Rd. blocking two lanes. Police and fire were already on the scene but they didn't have any cars in the northbound lanes of Baptist Church directing traffic. 220 and 65 stopped behind the fire truck with their lights on. 220 asked an officer if they needed help directing traffic. The officer told 220 to keep his vehicle in the lane and wave traffic around. 65 and 220 directed traffic for about 15 minutes until the vehicle was removed and the road cleared.

January 12, 2002 - 9:30pm - Unit #02 stopped to assist a motorist on Old Tesson across from St. Anthony's Hospital. 02 asked the female driver if he could do anything to assist her. She became very angry with 02 because he wasn't an officer. So 02 told her he would call the police to come help her. 02 called St. Louis County Police and told the dispatcher who he was and who he was with (REACT). The dispatcher was familiar with 02 so he asked in a sarcastic but funny voice "Ya? what can we do for you this evening?" 02 explained the situation to him and he said he would send an officer to the scene. 02 remained behind the motorist until the officer arrived. The officer thanked 02 for stopping. 02 then left the scene.

January 22, 2002 - 3:30pm - Unit #02 was on his way home from school on IL Route 157, in Illinois, when he came upon a two car accident blocking both sides of the highway. 02 turned on his lights, stopped, and checked on the victims since there were no emergency vehicles on the scene yet. He noticed that both male victums were injured because they had swelling on their arms. Both refused medical attention. 02 called IL Highway Patrol and told them about the accident. He told the dispatcher he could go back to the last intersection and shut down the southbound lane of 157 with their permission but they need to shut down the northbound lane. 02 drove back to the last intersection and shut down the highway. While there, he saw the ambulance and fire truck go by him. It is unknown what happen to the victims. 30 minutes later, IL Highway Patrol called 02 on his phone and told him to re-open the highway. 02 then continued on his way home.

January 23, 2002 - 8:00am - While going to school on I-270 near Edwardsville, IL, unit #02 saw a car spin out on the highway and end up in a ditch. 02 stopped and asked the lady said she was ok. She was fine, just stuck in the ditch. 02 helped her by pushing the car out of the ditch and back on the highway.

January 23, 2002 - 9:15am - While sitting in a class room at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, unit #02 heard a commotion in the hall outside the room. He walked to the hall and found a student having a seizure. 02 offered his medical training to help the victum. He got the medical history of the student from friends so he could tell the EMT's when they arrived. 02 was the only one there with medical trianing. After 02 got the air way cleared, he just kept monitoring the patient's vitals. It took ten minutes for the SIUE PD to arrive and twenty minutes for Edwardsville Fire Department to reach the patient. 02 thinks the student will be ok though. 02 also said that because of this incident, Tri-County REACT has earned the respect of the SIUE PD.

January 30, 2002 - 7:30am - While on the way to school on northbound I-55/70 in Illinois, unit #02 saw several cars stopped on the other side of the highway. One was blocking the third lane of the highway. 02 turned around in the median and headed back southbound. Just before he got to the car, IL Highway Patrol arrived on the scene. 02 saw it was a large car with a flat tire so he offered to help push it out of the way. (Since the IL Trooper did not have a push bumber.) 02 and the officer helped push the car off to the shoulder. The Trooper thanked 02 and he continued on his way back to school.
