August 2002 Highway Reports

August 1, 2002 - 11:20am - Unit #65 was turning from Bowles Ave. into his subdivision when he spotted a car parked at the entrance partially blocking the road. A teenage male was standing next to the car. He saw the emergency lights on 65's car and flagged down 65. He stated that his car was out of gas and asked 65 for a ride to a nearby gas station. 65 told him that this was his subdivision and he would drive home, get his gallon of gas, and return with it. The teen stayed with his car and 65 returned to him about two minutes later (with the gas). The teen poured the gas into the tank, started the engine, thanked 65, and drove away.

August 19, 2002 - 1:00pm - Unit #02 came upon a three car accident on the campus of SIUE (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville). 02 stopped and checked the victims for injuries. They were all all right so he called the campus police and directed traffic until they arrived.

August 20, 2002 - 7:00am - Unit #02 was traveling on I-55 crossing the Mississippi River into IL on his way to school when he saw a motorist on the shoulder with flares out behind his car. The man was standing outside his car trying to flag down someone to help him. 02 needed to get to his class so he couldn't stop to help. Instead, he called IDOT Motorist Assist and informed them of the stranded motorist.

August 20, 2002 - 7:30am - Unit #02 was still on his way to school on I-55/I-70 near Edwardsville IL, when he saw smoke ahead of him on the highway. As he got closer, he saw a car on the shoulder with flames coming out of the driver's compartment. There was a man standing behind the car trying to flag down help. 02 was about to stop and help but he saw a police car coming up behind him with its lights on. 02 figured the officer was responding to the car fire so he decided not to stop because he didn't want to be late for his class. The officer didn't stop for the car fire. Instead, he drove past it and proceeded to pull over a speeder 200 yards in front of the car fire. 02 saw this (and couldn't believe it) and did a U-turn in the median to get back to the car fire. 02 stopped behind the car on fire, got out his fire extinguisher, and started to put out the fire. A trucker had stopped and was also helping put out the fire with his extinguisher. 02 and the trucker put out the fire in a minute and 02 told the driver he had to get going. As 02 got back onto the highway to get to school, he noticed the Trooper was writing a ticket for the car he pulled over and was completely ignoring the car fire behind him.

August 20, 2002 - 4:30pm - Unit #11 was heading eastbound on I-55/I-70 crossing the Mississippi River into IL when she witnessed a vehicle accident in the left lane just in front of her. 11 pulled up behind the accident. Three cars were involved in the accident but there were no injuries. 11 got on her CB on channel 19 and started to inform motorists of the accident and that the left two lanes were closed on the bridge. She stayed until emergency crews arrived but kept informing motorists about the closed lanes on channel 19.

August 24, 2002 - 9:30pm - Unit #44 was traveling on westbound I-44 heading to Forest Park for the Moonlight Ramble bike ride when he saw a Blazer stalled in the fast lane on the other side of the highway. 44 turned around at the next exit and came back to get behind the vehicle with his lights on. As he approached the Blazer, he saw that he was too late. A car had crashed into the back of the Blazer a minute or two before he got to it. 44 stopped behind the accident, turned on his lights, and blocked some traffic lanes until police arrived on the scene. 44 remained on the scene and stopped traffic so the fire department could get to the accident. 44 left after the accident was cleared and continued onto Forest Park for the bike ride.
