April 2002 Highway Reports

April 4, 2002 - 8:45pm - Unit #65 and unit #02 assisted a motorist on northbound Highway 141 just south of Bowles Ave. The female driver told 65 she had a flat tire. 65 offered to change it but she said she didn't have a spare. She stated her husband was on the way so 65 told her he would remain behind her until he arrived. 02 left the scene at that point since he was not needed. 65 remained behind her with his lighs on for fifteen minutes until her husband arrived.

April 8, 2002 - 9:35pm - Unit #220 assisted with a vehicle accident with injuries on northbound Highway 21 one half mile south of I-270. He arrived at the scene of the accident and found a vehicle in a ditch. Fire dept. was already on thee scene so 220 stopped behind the fire truck with his lights on and started directing traffic. A STL County Police Officer arrived and asked 220 to remain where he was and assist him directing traffic. 220 remained at the scene for another fifteen minutes directing traffic.

April 8, 2002 - 9:40pm - Unit #02 stopped to assist a motorist with a flat tire on the ramp from northbound I-270 onto Highway 21. The flat tire was on the left side of the car and the female driver told 02 her husband was on the way to change the tire. 02 called unit #65 to the scene to assist with traffic once her husband arrived. 65 arrived a few minutes later. Her husband arrived a minute after 65 arrived. 65 pulled his car into the right lane and blocked it so her husband could safely change the tire. Her husband then decided it would be best if he changed the tire on a nearby parking lot so 65 followed the car around the corner and onto the parking lot with his lights on. He then left the scene. 02 left the scene to see if 220 needed any help at the accident scene in the above report.

April 8, 2002 - 10:05pm - Unit #65 and unit #220 assisted a stranded motorist on eastbound I-44 just east of Antire Road. The motorist told 65 he thought he was out of gas. 65 drove to get a gallon of gas while 220 remained behind the motorist. 65 returned ten minutes later with the gas. The car still wouldn't start after the gas was added and the engine didn't sound right so 220 let the driver use his cell phone to call for a tow truck. The tow company said they would have a truck to their location in about thirty minutes. 65 and 220 decided to stay behind the motorist until it arrived since they were in a bad location (there was a blind curve right behind them). 220 walked down the shoulder behind them and set out two flares behind the curve to slow traffic. While waiting for the tow truck, a Missouri State Trooper stopped to check the situation. 65 told the Trooper what was going on and he then left the scene. The tow truck arrived and 65 and 220 waved traffic out of the right lane while the tow truck driver stood on the white line to hook up the car. He secured the car a few minutes later. The motorist thanked 65 for stopping and they left the scene.

April 11, 2002 - 8:00pm - Unit #65 and unit #53 assisted a motorist on northbound I-270 just north of Highway 30. 65 originally heard about the motorist over the scanner. Sunset Hills Police was dispatched for a report of a motorist on the shoulder trying to flag down cars. The officer arrived before 65 and checked on the motorist. The officer called a tow truck for the motorist and then left. 65 arrived right after the officer left and told the motorist he would remain behind him until the tow truck arrived. While 65 was waiting, a car pulled up behind him. It was unit #53. He was on his way home and saw 65 on the shouldler so he stopped to see if 65 was ok. 53 stayed with 65 until the tow arrived and towed away the van.

April 11, 2002 - 10:30pm - Unit #53 and unit #65 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on northbound I-55 just north of Highway 141. 65 used his hydraulic jack to raise the car and 53 helped the motorist change the tire. Ten minutes later the tire was changed and the motorist was on his way.

April 18, 2002 - 7:30pm - Unit #02 and unit #65 assisted a motorist on the off ramp from southbound I-270 onto Highway 30. The teen driver told 02 he had a leak in his radiator. He didn't have a cell phone so 02 let him use his to call his father to come get him. Since the teen was on the shoulder of the off ramp and his father was on the way, 02 and 65 left the scene to look for other motorists.

April 18, 2002 - 8:00pm - Unit #02 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on southbound I-55 just south of Butler Hill Road. The motorist was having trouble removing the lug nuts when 02 arrived so 02 helped him remove them and assisted him in changing the tire. Unit #65 stopped to check on 02 but left the scene after 02 told him he didn't need any help and 65 spotted another vehicle on the shoulder further down the highway.

April 18, 2002 - 8:05pm - Unit #65 stopped to check on a vehicle on the shoulder of southbound I-55 just south of Meramec Bottom Road. The SUV was partially blocking the right lane and was unoccupied. 65 radioed to 02, who had just finished helping the motorist in the above report, to check the highway ahead of him (65) for anyone walking down the shoulder. 02 was unable to locate anyone so 65 left the vehicle.

April 18, 2002 - 9:10pm - Unit #65 assisted a motorist out of gas on southbound I-270 just north of Highway 30. The driver told 65 he was out of gas and 65 offered his gallon of gas but the driver stated his girlfriend was already on the way with some gas. 65 told the driver he would remain behind him until his girlfriend arrived. 02 pulled up behind 65 to see if he needed any help but 65 didn't so 02 left. His girlfriend arrived about 15 minutes later and 65 waved traffic out of the right lane while the driver stood on the white line to pour in the gas. He was able to get the car going again a minute later.

April 19, 2002 - 7:30pm - Unit #53 and unit #65, with unit #02 riding along, stopped to assist a motorist on eastbound I-64 just east of Mason Road. The motorist told 53 she was on the phone trying to get a tow truck. After a minute, she told 53 she had a tow truck on the way and she felt safe so 53 and 65 left her to look for other motorists.

April 19, 2002 - 7:40pm - Unit #53 and #65, with #02 riding along, had just gotten back onto eastbound I-64 from Mason Road after helping the motorist in the above report when they noticed a car come to a complete stop in the middle lane of eastbound I-64 (right next to them). They couldn't stop in time so they turned around at Ballas Road and came back westbound. They noticed the motorist was still stopped in the middle lane and cars were coming real close to hitting him. 65 turned on his lights and he and 53 turned around at Mason Road to head back eastbound to get to the motorist. 65 and 53 noticed a MODOT Motorist Assist Truck stopping to help the motorist in the above report. 65 told 53 to stop and inform the MODOT driver of the motorist in the middle lane. 65 raced towards the motorist with his lights on while 53 stopped on the shoulder. 53 told the MODOT driver about the stalled motorist blocking and the MODOT driver said "let's go", jumped into his truck, and raced to the scene with his lights on. Meanwhile, 65 and 02 had reached the motorist and stopped on the shoulder. 65 was about to get out his flares and cones when he saw the MODOT truck and a police car coming up behind him. The police car stopped behind the motorist and the MODOT truck stopped in the right lane to block it. The officer got out and started to push the vehicle to the shoulder but his hard shoes were slipping on the wet pavement. 02 ran up to the officer and helped him push the vehicle. The officer yelled a thank you to 02. 02 pushed the vehicle to the shoulder and the officer and the MODOT truck moved onto the shoulder as well. Another officer stopped behind 65 and 53. 53 told the officer the whole story and he thanked 53 for helping.

April 19, 2002 - 8:30pm - Unit #65, with #02 riding along, and unit #53 assisted a stalled vehicle blocking the right lane on southbound I-270 over I-44. 65 and 53 stopped behind the car with their lights on. 02 walked up to talk to the driver while 65 and 53 threw out flares behind them. Within a minute, a Sunset Hills officer stopped behind them. 02 told the officer the driver had a tow truck in route. The officer thanked 65, 53, and 02 for stopping. 65 and 53 then left the scene to let the officer handle the motorist.

April 19, 2002 - 9:10pm - Unit #65, with #02 riding along, stopped with his lights on in the left lane of Gravios Bluffs Road at Highway 141 to remove a shopping cart lying in the middle of the lane. 02 got out and pushed the cart to the grass.

April 24, 2002 - 4:30pm - Unit #220 assisted with a vehicle accident on southbound I-55 just north of Butler Hill Road. 220 arrived at the accident and found a SUV partially blocking the fast lane and turned sideways. There were no injuries so he remained in the fast lane with his lights on to block it until the police arrived. Unit #65, with #02 riding along, pulled up behind 220 a few minutes later. A St. Louis County Police car arrived right after 65. 220 and 65 then left the scene to let the officer handle the accident.

April 27, 2002 - 11:35pm - A thunderstorm had caused a power outage in south St. Louis County around the area of Telegraph Road at I-255. County police was calling for help to direct traffic at multiple intersections because the traffic lights were out (they were trying to get fire dept. incident commanders to come help with traffic). Unit #11 heard about the power outages and arrived at I-255 and Telegraph Road to help direct traffic. While most vehicles treated the intersection as a 4-way stop, some vehicles blew through the intersection without stopping and almost caused six accidents. Two STL County Police cars stopped to check on unit 11 at midnight and told her they had the highway department on the way with stop signs. They then left to check on a nearby shopping plaza that was dark. Fifteen minutes later, the trucks arrived with the signs and unit 11 left the scene.

April 29, 2002 - 9:15pm - Unit #65 and unit #220 were traveling on southbound I-270 approaching Highway 30 when 65 heard a Sunset Hills Officer over the scanner, who was out on a traffic stop on southbound I-270 at Sappington Road (one mile ahead of them), state that there was a vehicle accident on northbound I-270 that had just occurred across from him. 220 and 65 headed to the scene to see if they could help. 220 and 65 turned around at Highway 21 to head back northbound to the accident. They yielded to the Sunset Hills Officer as he passed them with his lights on. 65 and 220 turned on their lights and got onto northbound I-270 behind the officer. When they reached the scene, they found one car against the median wall and another turned sideways on the shoulder. 220 and the officer stopped behind the vehicle in the fast lane and 65 stopped on the shoulder to check on that driver. The Sunset Hills Officer radioed to his dispatcher that REACT was on the scene to assist but he also needed another police car. 220 remained behind the officer to shield him while the officer set out flares behind his car. 220 then moved onto the shoulder behind 65. 65 talked to the driver on the shoulder (both drivers were ok) and found out that he swerved at the last second to avoid the car stalled in the fast lane and ended up on the shoulder. Once the second Sunset Hills Police car arrived, 220 told the officer what the situation was and then 65 and 220 left the scene to let the officers handle the accident.

April 29, 2002 - 9:40pm - Unit #65 and unit #220 had just gotten onto eastbound I-44 after helping the Sunset Hills Officers in the above report when they heard the female officer (the one that stopped on the shoulder) at the scene on I-270 ask for rescue and the Highway Patrol to respond to her location for an officer involved traffic accident. 65 and 220 turned around and headed back to the scene. While they were in route, they further learned that a northbound vehicle in the fast lane drove over the flares and crashed into the back of the police car at a high rate of speed. It was unknown at that time the condition of the officer or the driver of the other car. 220 and 65 arrived on the scene to find the Highway Patrol and fire department already on the scene and they had three lanes closed. 220 pulled onto the shoulder at Highway 21 and began to warn motorists and truckers over CB channel 19 of the accident ahead and they needed to slow down. 65 drove further up to the accident and stopped on the shoulder with his lights on to slow down approaching traffic. 220 and 65 remained at the scene for over an hour until all lanes were re-opened. They then drove to the Sunset Hills Police Station (they were right behind the tow truck hauling away the police car). 220 went into the station to ask the dispatcher about the condition of the officer. The dispatcher told 220 the officer was not in his vehicle when it was struck, he was talking to the stalled motorist in front of him and both were uninjured. The condition of the person(s) in the other vehicle involved is unknown.
