2, 2001 - 9:15pm - Unit #73 was returning to St. Louis from southern
Missouri when the tire on the trailer he was pulling went flat on
northbound I-55 at the Festus, MO exit in Jefferson County. 73 and
his friend, who was driving a Jeep behind him, pulled onto the shoulder.
The flat was on the drivers side and 73 wanted to turn on his lights
to warn traffic while he changed it, since the speed limit was 70mph,
but he had a Bronco on the trailer and it blocked his rear facing
lights. So, 73 called 65 on his cell phone and asked if he could
come to the scene. 65 drove the 25 miles to Festus, MO and stopped
behind the Jeep with his lights on. He set out a flare, which slowed
traffic dramatically, and 73 started to change the tire. 65 shined
his flashlight on 73 so drivers could see him while he kneeled on
the white line. He finished a few minutes later and continued back
to St. Louis.

September 4, 2001 - 9:40pm - Unit #65
assisted two motorists partially blocking the right lane of westbound
Highway 30 just west of I-270. The Bronco in front of the car was
overheating when 65 stopped behind the car with his lights on. He
asked the driver of the car if he needed any help. The driver told
65 he was waiting for the radiator in the Bronco to cool so he could
pour in some antifreeze. 65 told the driver he would wait behind
him until he got the Bronco going again. Five minutes later, he
poured in the antifreeze and the Bronco driver started the engine.
They both drove away a minute later.

September 6, 2001 - 9:45pm - Unit #220
and #65 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on northbound I-270
just north of I-44. The female driver told 220 she called for a
tow truck but it had an ETA of one hour. 220 offered to the change
the tire so she didn't have to wait; she agreed. 220 got out his
hydraulic jack and started to change the tire on the driver's side
of the car. 65 put out a flare and waved traffic out of the right
lane while 220 kneeled on the white line and changed the tire. 220
finished a short time later and she was on her way.

September 6, 2001 - 10:15pm - Unit #220
and #65 assisted a motorist on the narrow shoulder of southbound
I-270 just north of I-44. The driver told 220 he was out of gas.
65 offered to pour some gas in his tank but the driver said his
wife was already on the way with some. 65 and 220 remained behind
him until she arrived a few minutes later.

September 8, 2001 - 9:20pm - Unit #65
(with unit #02 riding along) assisted a motorist with a flat tire
on northbound I-270 just south of Highway 30. The motorist didn't
have a lugnut wrench in his car so 65 let the driver use his. It
was the wrong size so 65 called 73 and asked him if he could come
to the scene with a 4-way lugnut wrench. 73 told him he was working
and couldn't respond but 65 could drive to his truck (a short distance
away) and get the wrench out of the back of the truck. 65 left the
motorist, got the wrench, and came back to the scene. The driver
then used 65's hydraulic jack and the wrench to change the tire
on the left side of the car while 65 waved traffic out of the right
lane (in the rain).

September 8, 2001 - 9:40pm - Unit #220
assisted a motorist partially blocking the right lane of southbound
I-270 just south of I-44. The driver told 220 she had a dead battery
and needed a jump start. 220 called to 65 over the GMRS radio to
find out his location. 02 (in 65's car) answered his call and explained
they were helping the driver in the above report. 220 requested
that when they finished, that they respond to his location with
the jumper pack to jump start the car. A minute later, a Sunset
Hills Police officer stopped behind 220. 220 explained the situation
to him and he told 220 he would remain at the scene and direct traffic.
65 and 02 arrived a few minutes later and stopped in front of the
motorist. 65 hooked up the jumper pack and the car started up. The
motorist then continued on her way.

September 8, 2001 - 9:50pm - Unit #65
(with 02 riding along) and unit #220 had just finished helping the
motorist in the above report when they heard a call come over the
scanner to the Sunset Hills Police officer about a vehicle accident
at I-270 and I-44. 65 and 220 turned around at Highway 30 and proceeded
back northbound on I-270 towards I-44. They followed the Sunset
Hills officer in the pouring rain onto the ramp from I-270 to westbound
I-44. At the end of the ramp, there was a van off the highway at
the bottom of a thirty foot ditch. 65 and 220 stopped farther behind
the officer on the shoulder while the officer stopped in the right
lane blocking it. Other police and fire trucks arrived a few minutes
later. 65, 02, and 220 remained at the scene for over an hour since
there was a blind curve behind the police cars and motorists merging
from the right couldn't see the police cars until they got right
up on them. They were able to see 65's and 220's lights further
back and slowed before they got to the police cars.

September 9, 2001 - 7:10pm - Unit #02
and unit #65 were in the Ponderosa parking lot on Lindbergh Blvd.
at I-55 when a little dog walked up to them. The dog had an out-of-state
rabies tag so they put the dog in 65's car and checked the nearby
motel for the owner. The motel clerk told 02 he had seen the dog
before and thought it was a stray. 02 called the St. Louis County
Police and they said they would send Animal Control to their location.
After waiting over an hour, 02 and 65 heard someone calling a name.
02 saw a man coming from the motel and he asked him if he was looking
for a black dog. It turned out the dog was his so 65 gave the dog
to him and explained what had happened. Animal Control arrived a
minute later and 02 explained that they had located the owner of
the dog.

September 14, 2001 - 10:00pm - Unit #02
was driving on eastbound I-44 at Lewis Road when he noticed something
in the middle lane. 02 slowed and saw the object was an American
flag. 02 stopped in the middle lane of the interstate and got out
to pick up the flag. When he picked it up, the other motorists saw
it was an American flag and stopped on the Interstate. They clapped
and cheered as 02 walked back to his car with the flag in hand.
02 later said to 65 "It was a sight".
September 15, 2001 - 10:00pm - Unit #220
was meeting unit 65 and 02 on the QT lot at Bowles and I-44 when
a teenager started transmitting over GMRS and called them a few
names that can't be printed on this web site. 220, 65, and 02 suspected
that he didn't have a GMRS license. The teenager began talking to
his friends, who also had radios, and they started playing a hide-and-seek
game using the GMRS radios. 220, 02, and 65 drove around the area
an started to triangulate their location. They found the teenagers
a short distance away behind a gas station. They watched as the
teenagers went into the gas station. 02 took off his REACT vest
and entered the gas station to see what they were doing. They walked
into the bathroom and came out a minute later. 02 entered the bathroom
and found empty battery packages on the floor. 02 showed the gas
station owner what he found in the bathroom and explained to him
what the teenagers had been doing. The owner said he would have
to rewind the security tape to find out if they stole the batteries.
02 radioed to 220 about what he found so 220 walked up to the teens,
who were in a SUV behind the station, and asked them if they had
a GMRS license. They said they didn't so he explained to them the
difference between FRS and GMRS and how REACT listens for emergency
calls on GMRS. 65 then pulled up in his car and turned on his strobe
lights in front of the teens to stop them from leaving. 220 then
flagged down a St. Louis County Police officer driving past the
lot. He explained the situation to the officer and the officer started
talking to the teens. 02, 65, and 220 then told the gas station
owner that the police had arrived. He told them he was going to
check the video tape. 220, 02, and 65 then left the scene since
there was nothing more they could do.

September 26, 2001 - 9:00pm - Unit #65
assisted a motorist on southbound I-270 at Highway 30. There were
two pickup trucks on the shoulder when 65 arrived, one was turned
sideways in the grass, so 65 asked the driver if he needed any help.
He told 65 he needed a jump start and the cables they were trying
to use were too short. 65 hooked up his jumper pack to the dead
battery and the driver tried to start the engine. It still wouldn't
start after a few attempts so 65 asked him if he wanted a tow truck.
He told 65 he would leave the truck there overnight and call one
in the morning. He thanked 65 for helping and left in his friend's
truck.

September 27, 2001 - 10:30pm - Unit #65
and unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on southbound
I-270 just south of Highway 30. 65 and 220 showed the motorist how
to lower his spare tire and then assisted him in changing the tire.
He thanked them for stopping to help.
