4, 2001 - 8:40am - Unit #220 assisted a man with a flat tire on
I-270 at I-64. 220 provided a jack and 4-way tire iron to help the
man change the tire and get on his way to work.
December 4, 2001 - 1:40pm - Unit #220 couldn't
do anything but laugh when an elderly man, driving a Honda Accord,
decided to drive his car through a new lane of wet cement. 220 eventually
helped out by stopping traffic and calmly directing the man to the
dry part of pavement. The elderly man and wife were on their way
to a doctor's office when the man got confused with all of the road
signs and thought he was going the right way. This all happened
on Ballas Rd at westbound Manchester Road.
December 7, 2001 - 3:05pm - Unit #220 arrived
on the scene of a two car accident on Lindbergh Blvd at Chaminade
Drive. No injuries were reported but they needed a police report
since one of the vehicles was from out of state. 220 used one of
the victim's cell phones to call Frontenac Police and advised them
that a police report was requested. Since both cars were blocking
traffic, 220 placed cones behind the scene and waited until the
police arrived.
December 8, 2001 - 11:50pm - Unit #220
came across two vehicles on the shoulder of I-64 east of Lindbergh
Blvd. One vehicle had run out of gas and the second vehicle just
provided the fuel. Nothing else was needed so 220 stayed behind
them with his lights on until they left.
December 9, 2001 - 9:00am - Unit #220 noticed
a stalled vehicle blocking a lane on Ballas Road south of Ladue
Rd. 220 got the car to the shoulder and gave it a quick jump start.
December 9, 2001 - 9:30pm - Unit #02 assisted
a motorist with a flat tire on eastbound Highway 30 at West Watson
Road. The driver told 02 he didn't need any help changing the tire;
just some light and traffic control. 02 blocked part of the right
lane with his van and called unit 65 and 220 for assistance. 65
and 220 were at I-44 and Hwy 141 checking I-44 for stranded motorists
when 02 called them. They got to the scene within five minutes and
stopped behind 02. 65 left the scene a minute later since three
vehicles were not needed. 220 and 02 remained with the motorist
until he finished changing the tire but 220 did have to use his
4-way tire wrench to loosen a stuck nut.

December 13, 2001 - 3:00pm - Unit #220
came across the scene of a two vehicle accident on I-64 westbound
just before the Boyle Avenue overpass. A vehicle had rear-ended
another causing three lanes of traffic to be blocked. Since nobody
was on the scene yet, 220 crossed over the median, kicked on his
lights, and blocked the three lanes with his truck. After checking
that there were no injuries, 220 put out some flares to warn traffic
of the lane blockage. Thirty seconds later, a MODOT Motorist Assist
truck arrived on scene and took command. He thanked 220 for helping.
December 13, 2001 - 8:00pm - Unit #02
and unit #65 stopped to help a stranded motorist blocking the right
lane of eastbound Highway 30 just west of I-270. 02 assisted the
driver in trying to start the car for over 15 minutes while 65 stayed
behind them waving traffic out of the blocked lane. The driver couldn't
start the car so 02 started to push the car (while the motorist
steered) off to the cross street on the right. 65 blocked the right
turn lane while they did this. He pushed the car onto the shoulder
and ran back to his van to move it onto the shoulder. The driver
told 02 he was going to call for a tow. Since he was safely on the
shoulder of a low traffic road, 02 and 65 left the scene.

December 13, 2001 - 8:25pm - Just as unit
#02 and unit #65 pulled back onto Highway 30 after helping the motorist
in the above report, they heard a call over the scanner for a traffic
hazard on northbound I-270 between Highway 21 and Highway 30. Police
dispatched it as a vehicle possibly blocking traffic. 65 and 02
got onto I-270 southbound to check the situation. The police started
to debate whether the motorist was in St. Louis County or in the
City of Sunset Hills. While they were debating, 65 and 02 found
the motorist on the shoulder. He wasn't blocking traffic, just getting
a jump start from a friend. 65 and 02 remained behind them until
they got the car going again and left the scene (10 minutes later).
It is unknown to 65 and 02 if any police cars responded to the call.
(For the record though, he was in Sunset Hills)

December 15, 2001 - 3:05pm - Unit #220
came across a vehicle up against the median wall on I-270 southbound
just north of I-44. There was a Ford Escort up against the wall,
left vulnerable for a serious accident. Since there wasn't really
enough time to turn around at the next exit and get behind the vehicle,
220 stopped his truck (on the northbound side) in the fast lane,
grabbed 3 cones, and tossed them behind the Escort for some better
visible protection. He then checked on the driver to see if she
was ok and quickly sped off to turn around at Dougherty Ferry Rd
and come back southbound again. During this time, Kirkwood and Sunset
Hills Police had cars enroute to the scene and were there in no
time. 220 turned around and got back to the scene to pick up his
cones. Both officers thanked 220 for his help. Originally, the woman
got a flat tire while driving in the center lanes of the Interstate,
but rather than hit the right shoulder (due to traffic), she decided
to go to the median instead.
December 16, 2001 - 3:20pm - Unit #65 and
unit #02 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on southbound I-55
just north of Butler Hill Road. The motorist was having trouble
releasing the spare tire from the trunk when 02 and 65 arrived.
A wrench was needed to remove a nut holding the tire in place. 02
brought up a wrench from his van and loosening the nut. 65 brought
up his hydraulic jack to raise the car while the motorist changed
the tire. Five minutes later, he thanked 65 and 02 for helping and
was on his way.
December 20, 2001 - 8:15pm - Unit #65
assisted a motorist with a flat tire on eastbound I-44 at Bowles
Ave. The motorist was from Illinois and told 65 he didn't know and
local tow truck phone numbers. 65 supplied him with a list of tow
truck numbers to call. The motorist called one of them and then
told 65 a truck would be there in 45 minutes. 65 told him he would
remain behind him with his lights on until it arrived. While waiting,
65 called unit #220 over the GMRS radio and asked him to come to
the scene to assist with traffic when the tow truck arrived. 220
arrived on the scene and shortly after he did, the tow truck also
arrived. 220 waved traffic out of the right lane while the tow truck
driver stood on the white line hooking up the truck. He thanked
220 for helping and left with the pick-up and motorist.

December 22, 2001 - 9:00pm - Unit #220
and #65 heard a call over the scanner for a vehicle accident (vehicle
in a ditch) on northbound I-55 just south of Meramec Bottom Rd.
220 and 65 got to the scene before the police and found it wasn't
an accident, just a vehicle turned sideways to jump start the other
vehicle next to it. 65 called the police and told them it wasn't
an accident and they could cancel their response. 220 and 65 remained
behind the motorist with their lights for an hour while they tried
to get the car started. The motorist and his family finally gave
up and decided to push the car to the QT gas station on Merame Bottom.
65 had left the scene to look for other stranded motorists shortly
before they decided this so 220 followed behind them with his lights
on while they pushed the car down the shoulder, up the off ramp,
and onto the gas station lot.

December 22, 2001 - 11:15pm - Unit #220
came across a stranded motorist on I-270 north of Hwy 40. A belt
had broken on the motorist's van and the driver needed a tow truck
to get it removed. 220 provided a list of tow truck phone numbers
and within minutes AAA was on the way.
December 22, 2001 - 11:35pm - Unit #220
spotted a motorist with his flashers flashing on I-270 north of
Olive Rd. 220 talked to the driver and transported him to the Quiktrip
gas station on Page Avenue to make some phone calls. An hour later,
a tow truck arrived, picked the car up, and drove off.
December 23, 2001 - 8:35pm - Unit #220
went to assist a stranded motorist with a flat tire on I-44 at Antire
Rd. The driver already had the tire off when he arrived so 220 stayed
in his vehicle behind him with his lights on until the driver changed
the flat and went on his way.
December 23, 2001 - 9:15pm - Unit #220
assisted St. Louis County Police (Fenton) with a motorist in need
of aid on I-44 eastbound near the Mraz Bridge Overpass. The officer
had arrived on the scene one minute before 220. As it turned out,
the motorist's van had overheated and rather than wait for a tow
truck, 220 offered some anti-freeze to help them get on their way.
The St Louis County Officer thanked 220 for his assistance.
December 23, 2001 - 10:35pm - Unit #220
attempted to assist two young ladies who had pulled off to the shoulder
on northbound I-270 near Clayton Rd. The driver stated that she
was presently lost, but was on her cell phone to get help. Within
a minute, she went on her way. Both driver and friend thanked 220
for trying to help.
December 28, 2001 - 10:45pm - Unit #220
went to check on a motorist (and his pals) in a stalled van at Hwy
40 & Maryville Centre Drive. The owner stated that he lived
in the area and that the van would be removed from the highway "first
thing in the morning". 220 referred the owner to call Town
& Country Police about the vehicle and the situation.
December 29, 2001 - 12:15am - Unit #220
headed to St. Charles and spotted a motorist with a flat tire on
westbound I-70 near the Daniel Boone Bridge. Prior to arriving,
two county officers attempted to break a lug-nut free from the wheel
of the vehicle but were unsuccessful. 220 got out his 4-way tire
iron and just before his buddy arrived, was able to break the nut
free. The motorist thanked 220 for his help and finished changing
the tire.
December 29, 2001 - 9:00pm - While en route
to meet up with unit #65, 220 spotted a motorist on the shoulder
of I-270 near Manchester Rd. Speaking broken english, 220 was able
to translate that the man needed a ride to the Wal-Mart to get a
new battery. The owner had spent most of the day replacing parts
in his car. 220 drove him to the store and the man thanked 220 for
the lift. The man then went inside to call a friend, came back,
and told 220 that he could leave because his friend was on the way
to help pick a battery out.
December 29, 2001 - 9:30pm - Unit #02
and unit #65 assisted a motorist on the shoulder of eastbound I-44
just east of I-270. The motorist told 02 he had engine trouble and
had a tow truck on the way. Since he was in the grass off the shoulder
02 and 65 left him to look for other motorists. 65 called unit #220
over the GMRS radio and told him about the motorist. 220 responded
to the scene and stayed with the motorist until his tow truck arrived.

December 29, 2001 - 9:45pm - Unit #65 and
#02 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on northbound I-270 just
north of Highway 30. 65 provided a hydraulic jack for the driver
to change the tire and an air compressor when it was discovered
the spare tire was flat. The tire was filled ten minutes later and
the motorist was on his way.
December 29, 2001 - 10:25pm - Unit #220
came across an older married couple trying to figure out their car
jack on I-270 south of Gravois Rd. 220 offered to change the flat
tire and get them on their way. He changed the tire for the couple,
the man thanked 220, and went on his way.
December 29, 2001 - 11:00pm - Unit #220,
#02, and #65 stopped to check on a motorist on the shoulder of southbound
I-55 just south of I-270. The motorist told 220 he had engine trouble
and had a tow truck on the way. 220 radioed back to 02 and 65 (sitting
in their vehicles behind him) to go ahead and leave; he would stay
there until the tow truck arrived. 65 and 02 then left the scene.

December 30, 2001 - 12:00am - Unit #65
assisted a motorist on the shoulder of eastbound I-44 just east
of I-270. The driver told 65 he had transmission trouble and his
father was on the way. 65 told him he would remain behind him until
his father arrived. 65 called unit 220 over the GMRS radio and asked
him to respond to the scene because the shoulder was narrow. The
driver's father arrived 10 minutes later and tried to tow the car
with a tow rope. While he was hooking it up, 220 arrived on the
scene. The car couldn't be put into neutral gear so a tow truck
was called. 220 and 65 remained at the scene until it arrived.
