September 2000 Highway Reports

September 1, 2000 - 8:45pm - Unit #65 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on westbound Highway 30 just east of Highway 141. 65 stayed behind the motorist with his lights on until he finished changing the tire.

September 1, 2000 - 9:15pm - Unit #65 assisted a stranded motorist on Antire Road at I-44. The motorist, who was on a cell phone, flagged down 65 and asked him what road he was on so he could tell the tow truck company. 65 provided all the information he needed and stayed with him until the tow truck arrived on the scene.

September 2, 2000 - 2:45pm - Unit #220 assisted a stranded motorist with a dead battery inside the Columbia, Missouri city limits. #220 stayed with the motorist until her friend (from Kansas City) showed up.

September 3, 2000 - 9:41am - Unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on westbound I-70 near the 119 mile marker. He stayed with the motorist until she was on her way.

September 3, 2000 - 8:55pm - Unit #65 assisted some motorists on the shoulder of eastbound I-44 just east of Antire Road. They pulled one car next to the other to jump it so 65 stayed behind them with his lights on until they were finished.

September 3, 2000 - 9:10pm - Unit #65 assisted a motorist just east of the location in the above report. They were separated from another car they were traveling with and were trying to reach them by phone. They eventually reached them by phone but they didn't know where the gas station was where their friends were waiting for them. 65 gave them directions to the gas station.

September 3, 2000 - 11:18pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on eastbound I-70 near Bryan Road in Lake St. Louis.

September 5, 2000 - 8:55pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on I-270 south of Manchester Rd. in Des Peres. 220 took the motorist to a pay phone at the Shell gas station & then drove him back to his car. Help eventually came.

September 7, 2000 - 8:05pm - Unit #65 assisted a stranded motorist on westbound I-44 just west of Berry Road. 65 stayed behind the motorist until the tow truck she called arrived.

September 7, 2000 - 8:58pm - Unit #220 checked on a vehicle with it's hood up on the highway. Nobody was around the vehicle, so he left the scene.

September 8, 2000 - 8:52pm - Unit #220 tried to assist a motorist that had broken down in the same general area. Nothing was needed, so 220 left. The vehicle was removed later that evening.

September 8, 2000 - 9:00pm - Unit #220 tried to assist people working on a Mitsubishi Eclipse on I-270 south of the Clayton Rd. overpass. Since there was already enough help, 220 went on his way and decided to check on the vehicle later if nothing had changed.

September 8, 2000 - 9:35pm - Unit #220 and unit #65 approached the scene of a vehicle blocking the left lane at northbound Hwy 141 near I-44. Nothing could be done because there was no driver in the vehicle so the police were notified.

September 9, 2000 - 8:55pm - Unit #65 assisted a stranded motorist on southbound I-270 one half mile south of I-44. Since the driver's wife was a little nervous about sitting on the shoulder of the Interstate, 65 stayed behind them with his lights on until the tow truck arrived.

September 11, 2000 - 10:45pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire at the ramp to Long Rd. from Hwy 40 in Chesterfield. Severe weather was approaching, so 220 acted quickly to change the tire before the heavy rain hit. The driver was grateful and thanked 220.

September 16, 2000 - 9:00pm - Unit #220 tried to assist St. Louis County Police (Fenton) and MSHP with a possible drunk driver on I-44 at Bowles. Upon being relayed the information from 65, 220 spotted the vehicle as it passed in front of him at South Highway Drive & Bowles Avenue. 220 followed the vehicle into and out of Quiktrip and then over to White Castles, when he asked 65 to contact Fenton Police to notify them of the location of the "suspected" drunk driver. Police were slow to respond because of shift change and the driver left the area.

September 16, 2000 - 9:50pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist on the off ramp from westbound I-44 onto Antire Road. The motorist was leaking fluid and had called a tow truck so 220 stayed behind them with his lights on until the tow truck towed them away. Unit #65 was also at the scene.

September 16, 2000 - 10:45pm - Unit #65 and unit #220 went to assist on a car fire at the Meramec River Bridge along Hwy 30 in Sunset Hills. The original call was for Old Gravios and the Meramec River. 220 went that direction and could not find anything. 65 was there first on the scene but there wasn't much to do except get stuck in traffic. 220 assisted the police with traffic control at West Watson Rd & Hwy 30, blocking traffic so that drivers could not pass over the bridge near the scene. After 15 minutes, traffic was able to go through on one lane. After 45 minutes, both lanes were re-opened.

September 17, 2000 - 12:00am - Unit #220 attempted to assist a motorist that was caught with engine trouble on southbound I-270 near the ramp to Dougherty Ferry Rd. in Des Peres. Since the driver had already called AAA, 220 waited until the tow truck arrived and then proceeded on his way.

September 17, 2000 - 12:30am - Unit #220 assisted two people, one was following behind the other. Vehicle #1 was having transmission problems, which started at I-270 & Dougherty Ferry Rd. in Des Peres. 220 followed the vehicle (which was driving too slow for the Interstate) from Manchester to where it stopped at Manchester & Clayton Rd overpass (heading north on I-270) to add transmission fluid. The vehicle stopped again at the Dorsett Rd overpass for transmission fluid. Vehicle #1 finally died in the middle of the highway (the motorist wasn't smart enough to get it to the shoulder) and 220 pushed the van off of the highway. The vehicle was left on the side of the highway and the driver/owner packed his things and left with his son in vehicle #2. The father/son were originally on their way to Florissant when trouble started.

September 18, 2000 - 3:20pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist that had run out of fuel near the intersection of Geyer & Watson Rd in Sunset Hills. 220 waited until the parent of the driver showed up with fuel & then went on his way.

September 18, 2000 - 4:30pm - Unit #220 assisted Town & Country Police at a 2 car accident on I-270 just south of the Clayton Road overpass. 220 waited until police arrived and then left the scene, once the two cars were removed from the highway.

September 20, 2000 - 9:05pm - Unit #220 assisted a stranded motorist that ran out of fuel on I-270 north of Gravois. The driver stated that his girlfriend was on her way with fuel, so 220 stayed with the vehicle until she arrived.

September 23, 2000 - 12:09am - Unit #220 attempted to assist a driver that had run out of fuel on I-270 north of I-55. 220 stayed behind the vehicle with his lights on while the driver put fuel into the gas tank.

September 23, 2000 - 12:44am - Unit #220 attempted to assist a motorist that was parked on westbound I-44 at Allenton/Six Flags Rd in Eureka. The driver stated that his vehicle was overheating. 220 offered anti-freeze but the driver already purchased some and was waiting for the car to cool down alittle. 220 left the scene after determining that there was no further help needed. The driver was on his way back to college in Rolla.

September 23, 2000 - 1:00am - Unit #220 assisted a motorist with a flat tire on Lewis Rd at I-44. The driver had already removed the flat and was attempted to put the spare on the vehicle when #220 showed up. All the driver needed was a flashlight and he was on his way back to Pacific.

September 23, 2000 - 9:40pm - Unit #220 and #65 assisted a stranded motorist and his family on eastbound I-44 one mile west of Antire Rd. Their van wouldn't start so 220 supplied the driver with a list of tow truck company phone numbers and a tow truck arrived on the scene within an hour. 220 and 65 took some of the family in their vehicles and followed the tow truck around for an hour trying to find a garage open on Sunday. After the van was dropped off, 220 and 65 took the family to a nearby motel. 220 and 65 were finally able to go home at 12:30am.

September 24, 2000 - 5:15pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a motorist who was stranded on I-44 west of Hwy 141. An officer had already talked to the motorist and called for a tow truck. 220 stayed with the vehicle until the tow truck arrived.

September 24, 2000 - 6:59pm - Unit #220 attempted to assist a couple of motorists in an RV that broke down on I-44, about one mile east of Stanton. Since the driver was not familiar with the area, 220 assisted them by looking up some towing company phone numbers at a nearby gas station. Ten minutes later, the driver had someone on the phone who was willing to come out and check the RV over. The gentleman thanked 220 for his help and offered money, but 220 refused. Instead, he gave the man a business card.

September 24, 2000 - 7:25pm - Unit #220 assisted a motorist (and his wife) by using his flashlight to help locate some faulty wires in the Chevy Blazer, near Union, Missouri. After locating the problem, the motorist was on his way.

September 29, 2000 - 10:24am - Unit #220, while enroute to a delivery, came upon a car blocking a lane at Kirkwood Rd & Rosehill in Kirkwood. 220 assisted by blocking the right lane with his lights on and waited for the man's buddy to show up with some chains to remove the vehicle from the road.
